Vastu Shastra — an ancient science related to building or buying an energy-compliant home — has gained significant popularity in recent years, and rightly so! The Vastu Shastra for home principles, when applied correctly, can assist with positivity, abundance, and happiness in the home as well as the people who reside there. A Vastu-compliant home that follows the laws of nature can fill the air with positive energy and harmonious vibration.
This blog post talks in detail about the 5,000-year-old Indian science of Vastu Shastra and how it helps make a house a home, proving to be conducive for the overall well-being of the residents inside.
Let’s start by understanding basic Vastu for home principles before moving on to the specifics of various rooms, furniture and appliance placement, plants to keep, and the like. These Vastu insights are especially useful when planning or designing your residential property to ensure balance, positivity, and peace.
Vastu for doors: The main door should be larger than the size of the remaining doors in the home. All other doors should be consistent in size – and smaller than the main door. The number of doors in a home should be even.
Direction of the main door: As per the main door Vastu Shastra, the entrance door is not just for the members to enter inside but also for the energy to flow freely. The main door, hence, should be placed such that you face either north, east, or northeast when stepping out. It can be said that the best-facing house as per Vastu is north, east, or northeast. Avoid placing a shoe rack or dustbin near the main door.
Applications for rooms: It is also vital to check the shape of the rooms for a home based on the principles of Vastu Shastra. Accordingly, the shape of rooms should either be square or rectangular. The rooms should have free flow of natural daylight and air coming in.
Furniture placement: Heavy furniture such as beds and cupboards should be placed in the southwest direction. It should not hinder movement at any cost. The dining table, preferably square or rectangular and not round, should be placed away from the main door.
Know-how for plants: Bamboo, Holy Basil, Money Plant, Jade Plant, and Aloe Vera are some Vastu-friendly plants that can be kept at home. When placed in a north or east direction, they help attract wealth and prosperity, promote health and spiritual growth, bring good luck, and, of course, purify the air.
Wood versus metal: When buying furniture or doors for the home, it is advised that you stick to superior-quality wood and not metal. The reasoning for this, according to Vastu Shastra, is that wood is associated with positivity and health.
Wall colours: The use of colours on the walls, cupboards, and curtains inside the home can also have an impact on the overall well-being of the residents. Light and bright colours such as white, beige, yellow, and green are known to be associated with positive energy.
Living room – a space that brings families together – should be located in the northwest direction. Ideally, the hosts and guests should be facing either north or east when seated, as these are considered the zones of wealth and prosperity. These Vastu tips are especially useful for those planning for house purchase in Delhi, helping ensure positive energy, harmony, and prosperity in your living space.
Oddly shaped furniture should be avoided in the living room – the most active area of a home. If one plans on having a mirror in this space, it should be placed on the north wall as per Vastu guidelines. The southeast direction of the living room should be made available for placing electronics and other appliances.
Master bedroom – a space for rest and rejuvenation for the head of the family – should be located in the southwest direction for stability. The bed should be placed such that the head rests in either the east or west direction.
Mirrors or television sets should not be placed directly in front of the beds. The temple should not be placed in this room. Paintings depicting waterfalls, sunsets, and fountains should not be placed in the bedroom, as they may lead to emotional outbursts. Mood lighting and fresh flowers are encouraged to be placed here.
Associated with fire and energy, the southeast direction is considered the most ideal for a kitchen. North, northeast, and southwest placement of the kitchen should be avoided. While the stove should be in the southeast corner, the refrigerator should be in the northwest direction for better flow of energy.
Since water and fire are considered two opposite elements, they should not be placed in the same row when designing a kitchen in accordance with the Vastu Shastra for home principles.
The bathroom should be well-ventilated and should be constructed in the northwest direction. It should never be constructed in the center of the home, as the center (also known as Brahmasthana) should be kept empty and clean at all times.
The toilet seat should be placed such that when someone sits on it, they face either west or east. The windows, if any, should be placed on north, east, or west walls, while the shower and washbasin should be in the northeast, north, or east.
The bathroom and toilet should not share a wall with the kitchen or pooja room. The taps and showers should not be faulty and leaking, as leakage invites negative energy.
There should be a space earmarked for pooja or meditation in the northeast direction of the home for the spiritual growth of the residents. It should be designed such that when one sits down to pray or to meditate, they face the east direction. Light colours should be preferred when designing this space.
As per Vastu Shastra, the southeast corner is considered to be highly auspicious, as this is where the fire element meets the east direction – the direction associated with the rising sun. This space is where the families should gather to perform havan.
Balconies that face north or east directions are considered the most Vastu-compliant, as they help capture the morning sunlight, thus inviting positivity. To increase peace and prosperity in your home, consider placing Vastu-friendly plants on the balcony. Garbage bins and any broken items should not be placed in the balcony to steer clear from any negative energies.
Moving into a new home comes with its own excitement and vigor. Optimal energy flow is vital in order to experience a fulfilling life. To maintain the health, wealth, and prosperity of the residents, one could easily follow simple Vastu guidelines for the home and make way for a Vastu-compliant space.
